Mountain Marathon Navigation
From Robin Sloan :
Reivers Orienteering Club is holding an event on Wednesday September 24th.
The OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) is this year being held at the end of October in the Cheviot Hills, right on our doorstep, and we know some local runners have been tempted to enter. Three of our members have planned previous OMMs and know a lot about the technical challenges and navigation techniques.
· Controls can be easy to find in clear weather, but what if the mist comes down?
· How do you relocate if the ground you are on doesn’t fit the map?
· What are the ‘rules of thumb’ which allow you to make quick decisions about route choice?
We’re holding an informal Club Night in Hawick, stating at 7pm with a navigation exercise just to remind everyone how to use a compass, followed by a discussion of hill navigation, with special reference to actual courses and controls used in previous events.
Anyone thinking of taking part in a mountain marathon will be welcome, and details of the venue, Wilton Dean Hall in Hawick can be found here.
Parking is fairly limited, so it would be useful to have a rough idea of numbers attending – just drop an e-mail to Rob Cranston.

Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay
Just a short message to invite you and your club to enter one or more teams for the 2014 Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay on Sunday 14th September.
As in previous years, the race is a 42k relay with 2,110m of ascent, run in four stages for teams of five runners. It starts and finishes in Comrie village in Perthshire and follows a highly scenic route up and around the hills surrounding Glen Lednock. Legs 2 and 3 cover rough mountain terrain, while Legs 1 and 4, although challenging, are closer to trail races.
The proceeds from the race go to support research into pancreatic cancer, the disease from which our friend and club mate Simon died tragically in 2008.
Last year 34 teams took part in a great day of racing, and for 2014 we can offer
- category and leg prizes
- a barbecue after the race (included in the team entry fee)
- what we hope will again be a very enjoyable and competitive race.
For any questions or more information about the race, please contact me at relay@strathearnharriers.org.uk

LAMM 2014
Last weekend James and myself embarked on our first mountain marathon, the LAMM 2014 which was based in Strathcarron in Wester Ross. As we were complete newcomers to the world of multi-day mountain orienteering events, we decided to enter the next category after the elite runners instead of a more sensible lower-grade option. Elite runners wear bandanas and headbands, they’re that good.
Anyway, they don’t tell you where it’s going to be till 2 days before so you can’t recce the area, and even then you obviously don’t get the route till you start the race. In this case, you didn’t even get it then, as they drove the Elite and A class to the top of the Bealach Na Ba on the way to Applecross and gave us another map which joined on to the first one just to make it harder.
You have to carry all the stuff you’ll need for 36 hours. It was slightly tough and we took almost ten hours the first day. No support, no drink stations, no nice folk handing out jelly babies, no bands at the side, nowt. On the plus side there were no tricky kerbs, slightly raised manhole covers or 10K chip timing mats to negotiate, and no kids banging plastic tubes at you. And the weather was great.
Once we clocked in to the midway camp we got the tent up, cooked some food and repaired to the tent to try and recover for the next day. The day started with a splendid rainbow and got out fine again. James and I decided to tackle an easier course (only 20K and 1000m height gain), especially as it was over 4 hours drive back to East Lothian afterwards. This went better than the first day and we finished just outside the top ten.
Anyway, a splendid time was had by all. The event was superbly organised, very friendly, and with a surprisingly wide mix of folk from greenhorns like us to seasoned vets. A few photos are included to give you a flavour of things. A club race next year no doubt.
