BUFF
The new Dunbar Running Club "Buffs" have just arrived. Just in time for the cold nights and the cross country - sadly, though, NOT in time for the Doon Hill race (which was the whole point).
Anyway. These can be worn as scarfs, balaclavas, hats, bandannas, caps, something called a "foulard" (no idea) or are handy as masks if you fancy a bit of a riot. Ladies can wear them as hair bands, while the gents can use them to disguise the onset of slap-headedness.
I seem to recall an advertising slogan... "Buff's...dozens of ways to look a diddy" (maybe not).
Remember to see/pester/annoy Anne till you get yours.

Speed of Light
Hello,
My apologies for contacting you out of the blue, however we would like to give your running club the opportunity to be involved in the early stages of an event which is taking part next year called Speed of Light.
To give you a bit of background to the project, Speed of Light will be Scotland's official contribution to the London 2012 Festival and the Cultural Olympiad. A major commission for Edinburgh International Festival, Speed of Light will run for 3 weeks throughout August 2012, and will be seen by over 18,000 people.
We are looking for distance runners from across the country to take part in Speed of Light and next August, up to 5,000 runners will have the chance of a lifetime to run a choreographed route around the path network of Arthur's Seat at night in specially constructed light suits. The stunning visual results will be viewed by a ticketed audience from the summit of the hill every night.
At the moment we are still in the planning stages of the event and we are looking for 150 volunteer runners to help us test out routes on Arthur's Seat during the day as well as making shapes on the hill using smaller groups of runners in our prototype light suits once it has got dark.
Our next rehearsal is taking place on Arthur's Seat on Saturday 29th October between 1.30pm till 5.30pm (day session) and 6pm till 8pm (evening session with light suits).
If this sounds like it would be of interest to your group and you would like to volunteer to be part of our rehearsals then please reply to speedoflight@nva.org.uk by Wednesday 19th October to book your places (Please state which session; afternoon only OR afternoon and evening)
Finally, we will also be launching our runner registration on 31st October, so please visit our website (www.speedoflight2012.org.uk) to be part of the big event next year!

Sunny for Some!
The sunshine here yesterday couldn't compete with the heat of Palma de Mallorca where Ian Sills and Jane Timms ran the half marathon. Ian finished 40th overall, 5th in his category, with a time of 1:22:55 and Jane ran a PB with a time of 1:58:09. Closer to home, Rhona Anderson competed in the Aviemore Half Marathon, finishing 28th overall in 1:27:25 and 4th in her category. Stuart and Anne took part in Rod's Memorial 10K in Berwick, with Stuart coming in 3rd and Anne being the second lady to finish.
The previous weekend was our own 10-mile race in which George Gilhooley finished 15th overall in 1:06:07 to take the 1st over 50th prize, with Rhona 3rd lady overall in 1:08:32 and newcomer Andrew Sheldrick having another good race, finishing in 1:19:48.
On the 2nd October, Stuart and Anne ran the Loch Ness Marathon, with Stuart finishing 35th overall with a time of 2:59:12 and Anne finishing in 3:51:04. Sheila Morrison had a jaunt to Ireland and took part in the tough Causeway Coast Half Marathon on the same day, finishing in 2:34:10.
The long awaited Rigg Race, postponed from the end of May, was a race of choice for Dr Neil Jones on 25th September, with Neil finishing in 44:52.
And now the wet weather is setting in, we can look forward to a few muddier races to come!
GOATS GALLOP
HELP have, once more, invited us to take part in their Goats Gallop race on Sunday 13th November.
It starts at 10:30 at Longyester and the route is multi terrain and takes in a climb up Lammer Law before a beautiful fast, downhill trail road that goes past Hopes Reservoir, before heading back onto road and back towards Longyester. All in all its just over 8 miles.
Previous years have seen us going for something to eat afterwards in the Tyneside Tavern.

Running legend Ron Hill will be paying a visit to Run And Become, Edinburgh's specialist running shop, from 12 noon on Thursday 20th October. Come and chat to, arguably, Britain's greatest marathon runner, and tap into the experience of the former Olympian, Comonwealth and European marathon champion. At 12.30 there will be a chance to "Run with Ron" on a short leisurely paced 5km loop from the store, as he keeps up his remarkable schedule of having run every day since Dec 20th 1964 - an incredible streak spanning over 45 years without a missed day of running .
Afterwards enjoy a well earned refreshment and from approx 1pm - 2pm Ron will be in store to answer any questions or simply chat running !

The 2011/2012 Borders Cross Country series kicks off this year on Sunday 6th November at Lauder.

Please note that Dunbar hosts the second race in the series on Sunday 20th November. This race is at White Sands and we will be looking for marshals etc.

EDF ENERGY, DUNBAR 10 MILE RACE. 8th OCTOBER
Online entries for this years EDF Energy, Dunbar 10 Mile Race (a.k.a. "Doon Hill) are now closed.
Note, however, that entries on the day are still available. Registration is at Hallhill Healthy Living centre in Dunbar. Registration opens at 9:30 and will close at 10:45 (race starts at 11:00).
Please note that the race has this year moved back one week from its usual space in the race calender.
This is to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of the founding of Dunbar Running Club.
