GOATS GALLOP - 25th November 10:30
Have you done the Goats Gallop before?
“Yes” – well then, you’ll obviously want to do it again.
“No – Why ever not?? Get that situation sorted…
HELP have once again extended an invite for us to take part in the Goats Gallop. This run has it all… hills (both up and down), roads and paths. The route goes from Longyester, up Lammer Law, down by Hopes Reservoir then a fast road section back.
The run starts and ends at Longyester at 10:30.
Highly recommended.

Getting a PB........
Brian Davidson finished in an excellent 3:18:48, Neil Jones in 3:59:26
and Theresa Leslie 4:23:30 - pb's for both Brian and Theresa (who
could still be celebrating as they haven't left Amsterdam just yet!).
Congratulations all for getting another 26.2 miles under the belt.
On Saturday, Sheila Morrison took part in the Antonine Trail Half
Marathon, following the Roman Antonine wall in the Kelvin Valley. A
tough, muddy, but enjoyable event - Sheila finished in 2:43, adding to
her tally of unusual events.
On the 7th October, Lee Curtis ran the popular Kielder Marathon,
finishing in 3:44:50 - well done Lee.
Katy Gardiner achieved a pb on the same day running in the Bupa Great
Edinburgh 10K with a time of 55:15. Another "Congratulations".
Sheila also ran the Linlithgow 10K the previous Sunday, finishing in 58:56.
Well done everyone.
Please let Anne know of any events you have taken part in for the club
news (or feel free to post your own reports/stories). Some results
pages aren't very search friendly, so apologies if anyone has been
missed out.

Grampian Mountain Challenge - 17-18th November 2012
Following on from a successful debut in 2010, the Grampian Mountain
Challenge is pleased to welcome runners to North East Scotland for
another unique blend of harsh weather, comfort, physical challenge and
mental challenge in November 2012. The same organisation team are
back with new ideas to bring the classic event format to a new
location, 1 hour from Aberdeen.
This event combines forest orienteering and mountain navigation over
two days in the Deeside area, with a remote campsite. The event
format will be the same in 2012 as it was in 2010. For those not
familiar with the format, the key points are:
• Competitors find their own way from point to point with a map given
to them at the start (map exchange at transition between
orienteering and mountain running),
• A, B and C courses available,
• Prepare for snow – this is November! (Note that distance/height gain
is similar to other MMs, but allowances are made for the time of
year).
• No GPS allowed, altimeter OK,
• Remote campsite – but kit bags are transported for you,
• Competitors must carry minimum kit (see separate list),
• Pairs or solo runners accepted,
• Minimum age and experience requirements (see rules),
• Hot evening meal supplied on Day 1 and a light meal at the finish,
• Breakfast available to purchase and hot water urn available overnight,
• Marquee at remote campsite with "heating" and music.
For more information, visit www.grampoc.com. To enter, visit www.sientries.com

ART EVENT !
Karen Gabbitas is one of my jogscotland group and also an Art graduate.
This Saturday 22 September she has arranged an 'Art Event' at North Berwick Law starting at 10.00am and lasting about 2 hours. The event which is to be filmed requires as many people as possible dressed in yellow hi vis jackets and black leggings to walk in single file from the bottom to the top of the law (hence the 2 hours).
Karen would appreciate you or anybody who would be able to take part to make up the ideal numbers. If you can't manage but have a yellow hi vis jacket you could lend us, for people who don't have one.
Let me or Karen ( kgabbitas@btinternet.com ) know. Pass this on to anybody else.

Braid Hills Cross Country
like to formally invite you all to Braids 2012! For those of you who
have been before, it would be lovely to see you all again. For those
who may just be joining us, it would be brilliant to see some fresh
faces!
This year Braids will be occurring on November 10th 2012.
Braids is a hill race hosted by the University's cross country club
the Hare and Hounds, and is a firm favourite in the Scottish Racing
Calendar. It's a very hilly three mile loop for the women and a rather
gruelling 6 mile double lap for the men around Braids Hill Golf
Course. For a University race, Braids usually manages to attract a
wide range of clubs and runners from around Scotland and the rest of
the UK, so there will be a strong field to test yourself against!
And as per usual we will be having the famous Braids Cake Sale
afterwards to refuel all you hungry runners!
Check out details on the hares and hounds website haries.eusu.ed.ac.uk.
Hope to see you there!

XC Dates (sort of) and a wee "heads up" on cheap gear.
Well, now that the long hot summers just passed us by it’s time to don studs and spikes and think about mud and slush again.
The Borders XC dates are now available at http://www.bordersxc.com though please keep your ears open and your eyes on the site as the date of the first round is more than likely to change…….
Talking of all things wintry you may be interested to know that premier supermarket “Lidl” is flogging cheap LED arm bands next week (4 for £3.99) just the ticket for the “toon run”. They also have running gloves for sale….might be worth checking out.

National Age Group track & Field Championships
the Olympic Games in London, it is important to remember that
athletics carries on here in Scotland!
Here is just a reminder of a few key dates and opportunities – with
entry deadlines looming for forthcoming championships.
1) National Age Group Track and Field Championships –Grangemouth
– August 25/ 26.
Entries close for this event on Friday 10 August – just over one week away.
This event is one of the THE occasions in the year to demonstrate your
Olympic and Commonwealth potential – or just the perfect way to bring
your season to an end by setting a personal best.
2) The Under20/Senior 4 x 100m National Relay Championships are
at Grangemouth on Saturday 25 August and, again, the entry closing
date is Friday 10 August. A great chance for senior athletes to get
involved on the age-group champs weekend.
To check any entry details or for more info please refer to the SA
website: www.scottishathletics.org.uk
3) Celtic Games – Aberdeen 11 August. Selection has just taken
place for this International event at U18 and U16 age groups, and with
the Celtic Games returning to Aberdeen whence they started in 1976, we
are looking forward to a great day on that Saturday.
For those athletes selected from Wales, Ireland and Scotland, along
with a few invited guests, this event really does mark a step closer
to Olympic level of competition. Fancy a great day out? Head to the
wonderful Aberdeen Sports Village and see junior International
Athletics.
Finally, are you switched onto "Twitter"?
If you are, or if you want to give this a try, why not follow
scottishathletics (@scotathletics). SA will be using this feed for
live results, bang up to date information, and for any athletics
gossip.

Carfremill to Gifford
We have been invited to join HELP in their annual Carfremill to Gifford run on Wedmesday 15th August.
For those of you who haven’t yet done this …. WHY NOT?? It’s a fantastic run regardless of the weather.
It’s the usual drill …….be at Gifford for about 1815 ish for bus to leave at 1830. Then it’s a simple 10 mile straight run back. And remember – “it’s NOT a race”!!
Let Stuart or Anne know if you intend coming along and if you want to go for the meal afterwards.

On Sunday 24th June, five Dunbar runners took part in the Lairig Ghru Hill Race in the worst conditions in the history of the race for 15 years. Sheila was pleased with her finishing time of 1:01, having been second female overall in the Oxford Park Run the previous day with a time of 28:14.
The bad weather didn't deter the 14 from Dunbar who took part in the Portobello 4 mile Road Race on the Thursday evening – Andrew Crichton came in first in 20:39, taking the Steedman Trophy, Ian Sills in 22:58, giving him the first vet prize and Stuart Hay in 23:11, taking 3rd vet prize. Ian Rowland finished in 23:30, James Addie 24:19, Brian Davidson 24:29, Lee Curtis 26:58, Neil Jones 28:19, Karen Page 29:05, making her first female vet, Karen Page, 30:34, Jane Timms, 32:26, Frank Weissgerber 32:53, Clarissa Berry 32:57, Anne Hay 33:12 and Theresa Leslie 33:24. Comrie Hills Relay
teams for the 2012 Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay on Sunday 9th
September.
As you may know, the race is a 42k relay with 2,110m of ascent, run in
four stages for teams of five runners. It starts and finishes in
Comrie village in Perthshire and follows a highly scenic route up and
around the hills surrounding Glen Lednock. Legs 2 and 3 cover rough
mountain terrain, while Legs 1 and 4, although challenging, are closer
to trail races.
The proceeds from the race go to support research into pancreatic
cancer, the disease from which our friend and club mate Simon died
tragically in 2008. Last year 32 teams took part in a great day of
racing despite some wild weather. We can't guarantee sunshine for 2012
but we can offer
° category and leg prizes
° a barbecue after the race (included in the team entry fee)
° what we hope will again be a very enjoyable and competitive race.

Seven Hills
Just a wee note to say that the Seven Hills of Edinburgh race was last weekend. Given the conditions and random nature of the course, I wasn’t too surprised to be the only club representative! I managed to get round in 2:19:40, a couple of minutes faster than last time (in 2007), despite spending several minutes sliding around on a muddy bank on Blackford Hill.

SUMMER OUTING WITH HELP
Can you please let me know if any one from your club is interested in taking part. I already have accommodation booked at Inchcree. HELP will provide minibus transport as usual.
Please let Stuart know ASAP (by email) if you want to go.
These events have been great fun in the past!!
How Many Miles?
travelled all the way to Dumfries and Galloway to take part in the
Kirkcudbright Half Marathon. In a cool 27 degrees and a strong wind
on an undulating course Ian was 5th overall and 1st Vet with a time of
1:23:21. Jane and Sheila were both just over two hours, 2:08:30 and
2:17:41 respectively, and were very grateful to be hosed down at 10
miles!
On Monday 28th, Stuart Hay, wearing no. 2, came 2nd in the Rigg Race
at Balerno in 34:28, with Neil Jones finishing in 44:10 and Anne in
47:35 (wearing no.1 and achieving 1st in her age category.
On Saturday 2nd June the club dominated the Haddington 10k - Ian
Sills was first East Lothian Vet with a time of 36:36, with Ian
Rowland three places behind in 37:31 and Grant Noble just behind in
38:09, which gave him the prize for first supervet. James Addie
finished in 39:35, Rhona Anderson in 40:42, which made her 2nd female
overall and first East Lothian female club runner, Mary Wood in 41:33,
Andrew Sheldrick in 43:59, Karen Page in 45:25, Anne Hay in 48:45,
Jane Timms ran a pb in 52.11, as did Clare Miles, taking 4 mins of her
previous best with 55:01. Rhona, Mary and Karen took the ladies team
prize. On the same day, Theresa Leslie ran the Stranraer Half
Marathon with a time of 2:03:57.
A number of the club took part in the Traprain Law Race on 9th – minus
the river crossing this year as the runners would have being swept
away! Ian Rowland finished 10th overall in 48:10, with Stuart
finishing in 49:26, Richard Taylor 51:01, Rhona Anderson, 2nd lady, in
53:34, Brian Davidson 54:00, Mary Wood 55:29, Andrew Sheldrick 58:59,
Neil Jones 63:27, Anne Hay 63:42, Clarissa Berry 71:56 and Sheila
Morrison 80:41. A first this year – a ladies team prize, won by
Dunbar. On Sunday 10th June Ian and Jane ran Mabie 10k trail race.
Ian was in the prizes again by being 3rd overall and 1st vet (for the
third year running).
This weekend was busy again with Jane, Ian and Brian Davidson tackling
the Park run in torrential rain and very strong winds. Needless to
say all were much slower than expected with the conditions, however
Ian was first and Brian 8th (so not too bad afterall!)
On Sunday Theresa Leslie and Sheila Morrison ran the Bamburgh 10K – a
very scenic run along the coast, billed as one of the most inspiring
races in the country! Theresa finished in 54:54 and Sheila in 56:07.
On the same day Ian Sills, Brian, Anne and Stuart travelled down to
Peebles for the 10K trail race and in very muddy conditions all had a
good race with Ian finishing in 40:10, Stuart in 40:34, Brian in 43:28
and Anne in 53.34.
Quite a lot of miles there - well done everyone.

London 2012
Hi,
To add to Anne's summary of the London Marathon this year, it was a great event and I was glad to have one of the club places and experience it for myself.
It turned out to be almost perfect weather on the day, with the toilet queues fractionally shorter than the race distance. The start was very busy, taking about 20 minutes to clear the first 2 miles, but it stretched out a bit after that. After giving up on catching the Kenyans, I settled down into my planned pace until the last few miles when the occasion, or possibly the previous 21 miles, started to get the better of me. In the end I was 69 seconds over my target, but not going to complain about that - Especially with the surprise that welcomed me after the race (pic hopefully attached).

March in 4:21:33 while still making the recovery from a broken foot!
Well done Seonaid. The weather, it has to be said, was nothing like
what we experienced last night - it was unseasonably hot and sunny
(like a British summer?).

Grangemouth, with Theresa finishing in 53:56.

Dunbar 10k - Provisional Results
A couple of known issues (one sorted, one not - yet).
There was a slight mix up with one of the ladies prizes due to "inadvertent gender realignment during the on line registration process". This has now been rectified - but prizes as handed out on the day apply.
Also some runners have noticed a slight discrepancy in their watch times to ours - this is being investigated and will be amended if necessary (however, the all important positions are correct).
We have received some fantastic pictures for Lesley Marshall that can be viewed HERE
We also have some snaps of the event "before and after" that can be viewed HERE.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RACES
OK. Here are the proposed races that will constitute the 2012 "Club Championship" races (thanks to Brian).
Please note that Dunbar "goes large" this year with the inclusion of "any ultra". However, there's loads of different distances and plenty of 10k's for those looking for fast races.
Oh. And the club 5k is included this year - so there's even more incentive to come along to interval training on a Thursday.
- Loch Leven Half
- Haddington Half
- Black Rock 5
- Any Marathon
- E2NB
- Any parkrun April/June/Sept
- Peebles trail 10K
- Portobello 4 miler
- Traprain Law
- NB Law
- Musselburgh 10k

- 3 points for each club 5K win......? (gives everyone a fair chance?) if you win it more than once you keep getting the points. Starts April.
Please let Brian, Theresa or Anne know about any changes/additions you may want to see. This MUST be done by Friday 30th March - otherwise we are going with the above list "as is".

Balfron 10k 2012
22nd April 2012 at 11am.
First run in 2007 (as the Co-operative Balfron 10k), this event has
proved extremely popular with runners of all abilities. The
officially measured course, chip-timing, winners prizes and
professional organisation appeal to the most serious runners, whilst
the friendly atmosphere, traffic-free route and excellent goody bags
including commemorative medal and T-shirt make it a great race for the
more casual runner and even first-time 10k-er.
This is a rural road 10k on an undulating route with in excess of 500
runners expected again this year. Online entries are now open at
www.balfron10k.org.uk or download an entry form and post it in.
Subject to availability, entries will be accepted on the day, but
early advance entry is advised to ensure a place and a guaranteed
medal and T-shirt.
There will also be various stalls and entertainment for spectators, as
well as an excellent café, so feel free to bring support with you too!

Mendham on 01360 440 175 or 07834 096 888 colin@balfron10k.org.uk
