THE GREAT NORTH RUN 2008 - Special Offer

Dear Dunbar RC,

THE GREAT NORTH RUN 2008 – Special Offer

Sunday 5th October 2008

Be part of the biggest half Marathon in the UK and join our team as we raise much needed funds. There is a £30 registration fee with no minimum sponsorship amount but an undertaking to raise as much sponsorship as possible.

Funds raised from the event will enable The Big Issue Foundation to provide essential support to our vendors that help us tackle issues such as: accommodation, sales skills, overcoming addiction, health and money management. By taking part, we can change lives, our vendors are survivors and together, we will take our vendors Off the Streets and Into Life!

There is a strict closing registration date of Friday 25th July 2008 for guaranteed places, so you need to complete and return your entry forms as soon as possible.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you want to register or have any questions.

Races

In between the Summer Series, several runners have been keeping up the competitive edge. Sheila Morrison and Theresa Leslie took part in the recent Diet Coke 10K in East Kilbride, which saw Sheila finishing in 55:32 and Theresa in 57:13.

The following Thursday evening was the Stuart Black Memorial Castle Bank Challenge in Norham, the heavy rain ceasing to deter the runners.  Andrew Crichton took first prize, finishing in 20:04, with Ian Sills coming in 4th overall in 20:38 and taking the veterans prize.  Other Dunbar runners were Steve Pattison, Ian Rowland, Anne Hay, Mary Pattison, Jane Timms and Keith Mills.

The following Sunday was the Lairig Ghru Hill Race – 28 miles between the police stations of Braemar and Aviemore, crossing between some of the highest peaks in Britain.  Out of 81 finishers, Ian Rowland came in 9th with a time of 3:40:58, and while sustaining a few grazes along the way, was quite happy with his result.

A Bit of Support Please....!

By way of supporting the junior members (and gaining some points for the club), it would be good to have seniors competing at Linwood on 10th August, particularly middle distance runners and throwers (all of you who have expressed an interest in doing what the juniors do on a Tuesday and Thursday - it has been noted and here's your chance).

There is a bus going, so you don't have to think about the travel.

Let Maureen or Anne know as soon as possible.

Family Day

Bobby Peters is in the process of organizing a Family day at Hallhill on Sunday 10th Aug between 1pm - 5pm - a children's
entertainer has already been booked and the help of Jo Macnamara the community development officer has been enlisted.

The idea would be that the sport clubs could run stalls to raise income or just let people know more about the individual clubs when
they meet and train etc. The event would also be used to promote Hallhill and the various other things that take place outside the sports
clubs.

If anyone has any suggestions as to anything we could do, please let Anne know.  Even if we just do something to promote the club, some ideas would still be useful.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PUNCTUALITY

Oblivious to the fact that his watch may not be in sync with everyone else's Ian patiently waited on the start of the Lairig Ghru Race.
