A Couple of Races

On Sunday, three members of Dunbar Running Club took part in the popular Inverness Half Marathon.   The conditions on the day were fairly good, with an earlier downpour giving way to sunshine for the start, with just a small shower during the course of the race.  Stuart Hay achieved a personal best at the distance, finishing in 19th place out of 1126 finishers, with a time of 1:18:36.  Ian Rowland finished 22nd in 1:19:55 and Anne Hay 355th in 1:42:48.

The previous Sunday, Sheila Morrison travelled to Arbroath to run the "Smokies Ladies 10 Mile", a course which included some climbs to add to the challenge, finishing in a creditable 94 minutes and 11 seconds.  A race to be recommended for it's great atmosphere.

The Final of the Borders Cross-Country

The final race in the popular Border Cross-Country Series took part in Peebles on Sunday.  The runners had the challenge of trudging through heavy mud in places, with the race taking them from Hay Lodge Park, along the river and over the viaduct, with two or three climbs thrown in for good measure.

In the junior race, Dunbar's Cameron Law was first East Lothian runner home, finishing 12th in a time of 9:54.  His brother Hamish finished in 10:08, with HELP's Innes Ogilvie finishing in 10:20.  Other club runners were Cameron Stevens 10:55 (DRC), Katie Watson 11:03 (HELP), Joseph Kowbel 11:06 (DRC), Rachel Watson 11:10 (HELP), Jordan Robbins 11:25, Katie Proudfoot 11:41, Katherine Andrews 11:58, Linda McCandlish 12:01, Cory Smith 12:15, Hannah Chapman 13:25 (all DRC) Anna Balfour 13:38 (HELP) and Rebecca Turner 16:39 (DRC).

The senior race was again won by Keith Hood of Corstorphine AAC with an impressive time of 23:46.  Stuart Hay of Dunbar finished 14th in 26:27, with club mate Ian Sills thirty seconds behind in 26:57, then Craig Goldie (DRC) the next East Lothian runner home in 28:31.  Also competing were Eddie Balfour 28:59 (HELP), Alex Oliver 29:20 (MADAC), Rhona Anderson 30:07 (DRC), Brian Davidson 30:42 (DRC), Frank McPartland 31:12 (HELP), Andrew Anderson 31:24, Neil Jones 33:30, Anne Hay 34:05, Neil Teather 34:36 (all DRC), Ray Harris 35:47, Ruth Watson 35:55, Saartje Drijver 39:40 (all HELP), Sheila Kerr 42:05, Jane Timms 42:01 and Sheila Morrison 43:36 (all DRC).

At the prize-giving afterwards, Rachel Watson of HELP received 1st prize in the female 11 and under category and Andrew Govan of Dunbar achieving 2nd prize in the male 16-17 category.  Dunbar's Rhona Anderson and Sheila Morrison both received 2nd prize in their respective categories of F45 and F55.  HELPS Sandy Wallace and Ray Harris received 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively in the M55 category.  All entrants to the series received a t-shirt to celebrate "21years of real x-country".

The previous Sunday, Sheila Morrison had taken part in the Kirkintilloch Olympians 12.5 k Road Race, a difficult, hilly course described as one of the toughest road races in Scotland, which Sheila completed in 74m 33 s.

A number of the runners are looking forward to the Lasswade 10 mile road race next weekend.

British Men’s League

Dear club representative and interested individuals,

Formation of "Scotland East" Athletics Club for British Men's League

A positive meeting regarding the formation of a "Scotland East"
Athletics Club for the British Men's League took place on Sunday 17th
January at the Kelvin Hall.

A supporting document providing some background information on the
concept was distributed at the meeting and is attached below.

To take the formation of the Club to the next stage we are proposing
to hold a meeting on Monday 15th March at 7 pm at Caledonia House,
scottishathletics offices, Edinburgh.

This is open to anyone interested in helping to drive this forward.

We would need to look specifically at:

• Set up of new club – constitution, name, office bearers, affiliation
• Funding of new club
• Recruitment of athletes

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this meeting
so that we can start to take this project forward.

If you do plan to attend could you please email

Coasters Run BG

A unique event is planned this year to run a relay around the entire
coast of Great Britain. The idea was born on an online running forum
just before Christmas and has already attracted a huge level of
support from the running community.

We've divided the coast into 20 stretches with local co-ordinators
pulling together the runners and leg routes to cover their stretches.
We plan to start the relay in Blackpool in May and then pass 'Barry
the Baton' on to a runner or group of runners covering the next leg or
stretch. This will continue until we've run around the entire coast
ending up back in Blackpool!

Our aim is to keep the event simple and inclusive so have runners of
all abilities taking part, whether they are beginners who can run 3
miles or ultra runners doing 50, they will share the experience of
achieving something truly unique.

An independent website has been created (www.coastersgb.co.uk) to
attract new 'Coasters' and to keep everyone updated with progress.
Although we already have over 260 runners signed up it's not yet
enough to ensure the relay is a success.

We are therefore looking for new 'Coasters' throughout Scotland,
England and Wales and would be very grateful for your assistance in
spreading the word.

We can offer a mention on the website for Dunbar Running Club and of
course all Coasters will have their name on the roll of honour for
taking part in the very first Coastal Relay.

Kind regards

Kathleen Pearson

POLL - RESULTS

Our pollster has been suffering, of late, from a bout of forgetfulness (i.e. forgetting the poll).
Anyway it appears that just over half of you are gullible and believe the results of on line polls (58%), while 41% don't ......... but still feel the need to cast their vote.

Anyway, a new more running orientated question this month folks... eye's right and slightly upwards if you please.

The Marie Curie Whole Hog Challenge 2010 - Adventure Race

Now in its second year, the Marie Curie Whole Hog is more than just a
cross country obstacle race – it is an event which incorporates the
challenge of the wild terrain of the Scottish countryside, and the
warmth of a grand hog roast party.

Climbing up waterfalls. Scrambling through mud. Helping your
team-mates. Testing your endurance. This six mile adventure race
promises to be an unforgettable experience.

I discovered the Dunbar Running Club website today, and thought our
event may be of interest to some of your club members. We would be
delighted if you were able to join us - either in teams of three, or
individual entrants. By helping us to promote The Marie Curie Whole
Hog you will be ensuring that we can continue to provide high quality
nursing, totally free, to give people with terminal cancer and other
illnesses the choice of dying at home, supported by their families.

The all terrain adventure race will be held at Balfron Estate,
Glasgow, on Saturday 8th May 2010, and we are looking for lots of keen
participants.

If you would like any further information on The Marie Curie Whole Hog
2010 or on the work of Marie Curie Cancer Care, please do not hesitate
to contact the Scottish Events Team on 0131 561 3963 or send me a
reply to this email address.

Thank you so much for your support.
