HAPPY NEW YEAR
Some were chasing the "win", some were chasing a "time" and some were just out for the sheer hell of it (perhaps some did it to work up a thirst for the night?)
One runner even chose the event to herald their return to racing after a prolonged absence!
Whatever their goal...well done to everyone who took part.

2012 Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run
participation sporting event but we know that club entrants are the
foundation of that success. Online entries for the 2012 event are now
open and we hope that your club will encourage members to take part on
Sunday 2 September.
Enhancements for 2012
Along with feedback from our sister race – the Women's 10k – we are
planning a range of improvements for 2012 which should be of real
interest to your members. Developments for next year are kicking off
with:
• Prices frozen for the 2nd year running – enter at 2010 rates!
• Limited edition technical t-shirt option for early
bird entries*
• More of the same great organisation and friendly atmosphere
Keep checking the website regularly for the latest updates on the 2012
developments and enhancements. Alternatively, encourage members to
join our online community on facebook or twitter for instant updates.
Raise more for charity online
The Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run is a fundraising powerhouse
with an estimated £1.5m going to good causes in 2011. With our online
fundraising system you can raise more for charity compared to other
online systems. This is because our provider is not-for-profit so
their charges are lower and they collect Gift Aid contributions for
free!
Find out more about fundraising online on our website.
Thank you for your continued support of the Bank of Scotland Great
Scottish Run and may we wish you a successful 2012 for your club.
See you at the start line!

The Strathearn Marathon
will take place for the first time on Sunday 10th June 2012. It is
organised by Strathearn Harriers running club.
The race starts and finishes just outside the village of Comrie, and
its route follows quiet roads through the beautiful scenery of
Strathearn. The setting is stunning but with about 1500 feet of
ascent this is an event that will present a tough challenge even to
experienced runners!
We hope the Strathearn Marathon will be of interest to your club
members and we'd be very grateful if you could make them aware of it.
Full information about the race is at www.strathearnmarathon.org.uk.
Many thanks for your help.

The Festive Holidays
returning two weeks later on 5th January.
By way of seeing in 2012, how about taking part in the Black Bun Run
on Hogmanay! Those familiar with this will know it is a nice dash
round a circuit of about a mile and a half - starting and finishing
opposite the Mason's Arms in Dunbar. This is open to members, their
families and friends (that includes children) and commences at 7:00
pm, whatever the weather.
If you don't over-indulge and fancy a New Years' Day run - there's
always the Portobello Prom run. Good fun and only four miles. Keep
an eye on the Porty website for details.
Merry Christmas everyone.

FESTIVE HALF
First back in the 10k race was Joe Bourhill knocking about 7 minutes off his handicap time, while Andy Sheldrick got in a bit early London training and knocked 4 minutes off his handicap to cross the line first in the half in a time of 1:40. While Santa's little helper Jamie bagged the prize for best costume!
All times can be viewed HERE while some extra photos can be viewed HERE.

XC WHITE SANDS - THANKS
Some nice pictures of yesterdays XC race at White Sands from Brian.
Who, I suspect, extended the course onto the slippery rocks to enhance his photo opportunities.
And thanks to Ian for adding a couple of extra wee hills onto an otherwise fairly flat route.
Anyway. Thanks to everyone who helped out on the day and a big thanks to the council for assistance in getting the public loos open, as well as giving us the key for the height restriction barrier. (Also a big thanks to the council for removing the “David Essex fan club” earlier in the week!)
Other than a couple of wrongly transcribed numbers in the junior race (and those will be sorted soon) the feedback appears to be quite positive.
Couple of nice reports on the Portobello site HERE and HERE , while both Moorfoot and Carnethy seemed to enjoy their day out by the seaside.
Again, thanks to all, and now we can “relax” and enjoy running the remainder of the series! J

FROM THE GUARDIAN.
Charlie Brooker writes in todays Guardian about becoming a runner. See HERE for full article.
Worth reading some of the comments too.
AT LEAST ITS WARM SOMEWHERE
Although it's officially Spring here, Val was running in 32 degrees (maybe more) of sunshine on Saturday. See the attached photo - the first entrant in a) the furthest travelled retro vest competition and b) the hottest run retro vest competition. There were 43 runners on Saturday doing either an 8.1k long course or 4k short course. Everyone gets timed each week and there's a handicap run on the last Saturday of the month, followed by a BBQ of snags (sausages). Hope you're all running well.
Cheers, Jim

BUFF

Speed of Light
My apologies for contacting you out of the blue, however we would like to give your running club the opportunity to be involved in the early stages of an event which is taking part next year called Speed of Light.
To give you a bit of background to the project, Speed of Light will be Scotland's official contribution to the London 2012 Festival and the Cultural Olympiad. A major commission for Edinburgh International Festival, Speed of Light will run for 3 weeks throughout August 2012, and will be seen by over 18,000 people.
We are looking for distance runners from across the country to take part in Speed of Light and next August, up to 5,000 runners will have the chance of a lifetime to run a choreographed route around the path network of Arthur's Seat at night in specially constructed light suits. The stunning visual results will be viewed by a ticketed audience from the summit of the hill every night.
At the moment we are still in the planning stages of the event and we are looking for 150 volunteer runners to help us test out routes on Arthur's Seat during the day as well as making shapes on the hill using smaller groups of runners in our prototype light suits once it has got dark.
Our next rehearsal is taking place on Arthur's Seat on Saturday 29th October between 1.30pm till 5.30pm (day session) and 6pm till 8pm (evening session with light suits).
If this sounds like it would be of interest to your group and you would like to volunteer to be part of our rehearsals then please reply to speedoflight@nva.org.uk by Wednesday 19th October to book your places (Please state which session; afternoon only OR afternoon and evening)
Finally, we will also be launching our runner registration on 31st October, so please visit our website (www.speedoflight2012.org.uk) to be part of the big event next year!
Best wishes,
Claire

Previous years have seen us going for something to eat afterwards in the Tyneside Tavern.
Highly recommended.

Kirkintilloch Half Marathon
This new half marathon is taking place on October 9 2011, which runners can enter on line at EntryCentral. The direct link is http://www.entrycentral.com/index.php?raceID=101212
The inaugural Neil McCover Memorial race is being held on the roads around Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire. The race is being supported by the local council and Strathclyde Police. The course was previously used by the Luddon Half Marathon in the 1980s, and at that time generated some of the fastest times in Scotland, including two of the top 20 all time best performances over this distance.
The race limit has been set at 1500 and we are encouraging runners of all abilities to consider taking up the challenge of competing in the race. There are special prizes for 'novice' half-marathoners, as well £2000 of prize money.
Neil McCover was the chair of Kirkintilloch Olympians and competed in road races, duathlons and triathlons. He was a highly respected Superintendent in Strathclyde Police and was tragically killed in a cycling accident in October 2010 whilst training with colleagues.
Come along and help make this a memorable race.

Cursa Muntanya Torrelavit 10km

Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mactaylors/sets/72157627097741915/
Whilst holidaying near Barcelona I found this local 10km hill/trail race to
do up in the mountains. Not a bad little race and my first experience of
Spanish running.
Å’The Fiesta de L¹Esport, Torrelavit¹ included a couple of kids races, but
the main event was the 10km. Set in a small town in what appeared to be the
middle of nowhere, over 300 runners turned up to run. Torrelavit¹s version
of Stuart Hay, the race organiser Juango Marquez did his bit for
international relations and gave me a number, despite the race bookings
closing 2 days earlier. Muchas gracius! I was the only UK and English
speaking runner so the language barrier was a problem. Despite a 7.30pm
start, it was still 28C on the thermometer and heat was going to be my
biggest problem. I noticed none of the runners were carrying water, so not
wanting to look like a loser before we started I ditched mine. A good move
as water stations at 2km and 6km (on a 10km race!) provided welcome
refreshments.
I nudged my way to the middle of the crowd at the start. No starting pistol
here though. Instead they light a Roman Candle and when it explodes (in
amongst the crowds of screaming kids) it is a mad dash through the narrow
streets before heading out to the local vineyards. Overtaking was a
challenge as the route was lined with cacti and other nasty prickle bushes.
The path was a dry, dusty, stony path and sun was burning. By 2km the water
station was timely as by then my mouth was so dry it resembled something
like Ghandi¹s flip flop. From here on it was a circular route of ups and
downs. Occasionally there would be a bit of shade in the woods but the heat
was draining. The downhill sections were a challenge too as they headed down
badly eroded paths. I hit the breaks a little there as I was trying to
remember what exactly my travel insurance did cover. I wasn¹t sure falling
down a ravine was one of them!
I carried my water and used it to cool down later on. This seemed to annoy
some guy behind me who kept shouting at me. I plodded on leaving him to
sweat it out. Other hazards included a variety of reptiles that run across
the path. The course was circular and at 9km we were heading down hill on
familiar ground. But just as I settled in for a sprint home, another spike
of a climb faced me. It caught me out as I¹d used up quite a bit of energy
and it forced me to a walk. At the top of it I could see the figure of an
athlete collapsed on the ground. The heat had taken its toll on him. The guy
in front shouted something at him and he responded so I knew he wasn¹t dead!
I shouted ³Ee¹ argh mate not far now², but he just groaned something back in
Spanish. I was of little use to him so I ran past and decided to get help.
Fortunately someone else had the same idea and an ambulance passed me as I
ran to the finish line. At the finish line I was delighted to hear cheering
kids. I later discovered it was a recording of them (probably taken when
they let off the Roman Candle) that is triggered by your chip as you pass
the sensor. After a cool down I collected my goody bag and then indulged in
the post race feed of fruit, cake, chocolate and Coke. Sadly no prizes for
me, although I was happy with a position of 24th and a time of 47minutes, a
nice techy t-shirt and the unusual gift of a carton of Christmas soup!

COMPETITION

These are going to be given to all members (senior and junior) and also handed out at our next race (Doon Hill).
This is part of our 25th anniversary celebrations. But we want a design that's produced by one of our members.
What we need is a design that covers a maximum area of 24cm x 48cm and can only have three colours: green, black and white (club colours). The design can be a lot smaller and repeated (or "tiled" over the print area.)
While not essential we would prefer something that's relevant to running, relevant to Dunbar and reflects the fact that the club is 25 years old (1986-2011).
We only have a couple of weeks to choose a design so the deadline is tight and the closing date is Wednesday 22nd June.
Please submit your designs via the usual club email address. Entries can be any of the usual format files (jpg, gif, bmp etc).
So get designing now.. Remember there's no prize as such, other than the satisfaction of seeing your design on loads of other runners...

Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay Race
Just a short message to invite you or your club to enter one or more teams for the 2011 Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay Race on Sunday 11th September.
The race is named in memory of our friend and clubmate Simon who died tragically from pancreatic cancer in 2008, aged 47. The proceeds from the race will go to support research into this terrible disease.
As you may know, the race is a 42k relay with 2,110m of ascent, run in four stages for teams of five runners. After temporary changes to Legs 2 and 4 last year, the 2011 race reverts to its previous route, which starts and finishes in Comrie village in Perthshire and follows a highly scenic route up and around the hills surrounding Glen Lednock.
Legs 2 and 3 cover rough mountain terrain, while Legs 1 and 4, although challenging, are closer to trail races.
Last year 35 teams took part and we hope to see as large a field again in 2011. We can't guarantee sunshine on the day, although the weather has been kind in previous years, but we can offer
° category and leg prizes provided by our sponsors, The Famous Grouse Experience
° a barbecue (included in the team entry fee)
° what we hope will again be a very enjoyable and competitive race.

Workout in the Woods
My name's James Buchanan and my wife and I run www.dunbarfitness.co.uk . I would like to extend an invitation to all Dunbar Running Club members to join our Workout in the Woods session on Wednesdays at 6.30pm, meeting at the corner of Middlemass and Kellie Road. The first session will be free for members of your club and £4.00 after or 11 sessions for £40. We use a mixture of interval running, strength endurance exercises with kettlebells, medicine balls and TRX, along with 1-1 pad work. As an ex-distance runner/triathlete myself I know the importance of race pace intervals, pushing the anaerobic threshold, strengthening the ligaments in the knees and strengthening the posterior chain and core muscles for correct running technique. Various recent studies also show the benefit of this type of training for aerobic exercise. My wife Cristina is also a CYQ qualified running coach trained in the pose method. Please pass the message to your club members and I hope to see some of you next week.
Yours,
James Buchanan
